Blame the equipment

Twitter users no doubt found this week to be extremely frustrating, as they repeatedly encountered the so-called “fail whale.” For its part, Twitter blamed networking equipment in a blog posting.
Some estimates put Twitter’s daily usage at 65 million tweets, and that of course would put a strain on any site’s equipment. In this latest round of problems, though, users joked about “social suicide.” Others have expressed their disdain for the fail whale, with some playing a game that involves killing as many fail whales as one can find.
The reaction to the latest outage speaks to how popular the site has become. Some sites are down and no one notices. These days, when Twitter goes offline, everyone notices, and it becomes news. There’s no word from Twitter in regards to plans for upgrading their capacity.
