As of yesterday, Internet connectivity in the city is allegedly one-gigabit-per-second, whether upload or download. The city says that this is, on average, 250 times faster than the connectivity in any other U.S. city. Such connectivity will come at a price, though; the power company will be providing the connection, and will set customers back $350 a month.

Although the price point will cause appeal to be mostly in the business arena, it is available to private consumers, as well. If you’ve got the money, honey, they’ve got your disease, if your “disease” is fast, fast, fast speed, and if their claims are accurate.

One possibly telling sign: the city’s mayor won’t even order the service.

It is a security hole that apparently allows a malicious party to seize control of your computer. The warning pertains to versions 10.1.82.76 and earlier for these operating systems: Windows, Mac, Linux, Solaris, and Android.

Also involved in the warning is the Adobe Reader 9.3.4 and earlier for Windows, Mac, and Unix, as well as Adobe Acrobat 9.3.4 and earlier for Windows and Mac. While making the warning, Adobe said it wasn’t aware that any actual exploits have occurred as of yet.

Fixes for these problems are expected by the end of the month and into October, and Windows offers this advice in the meantime.

It lets you keep up on your e-mail, social networking, text messages, and of course phone calls wherever you go. It’s also an expensive bugger. If you don’t sign a contract, you could pay $300 or more for the much-hallowed device. Even with a contract, the unit can be expensive, depending on what provider you go through. But not anymore, at least not for Verizon Wireless users.

For just $29.99, the new BlackBerry Curve 3G 9330 on Verizon Wireless could be yours. It has all the features you’d expect in a BlackBerry. There are, of course, some catches. You’ll need to sign a two-year contract, and hand in a rebate to get $100 back. Essentially, you’ll be paying $129.99 upfront.

The unit will roll out this month to business customers, and to everyone else in a matter of weeks.

This, as a result of Google Instant Search being released to a semi-unsuspecting world.

As the name suggests, Google’s search results now change instantly based upon keyword entries. Type in a word, and instantly the screen changes, and displays appropriate keywords. With the addition of this new feature, we’ll save anywhere from 2-5 seconds per query, according to Google.

Perhaps the most useful component of this new feature is the elimination of the need to hit “Enter” following a query. Now, search results will instantly appear on the screen, making searching quick and easy.

Although there do appear to be some flaws– the Instant Search feature is dependent upon a high-speed connection without any slowdowns– it is overall a great feature, which will put answers at users’ fingertips faster than ever before.

Operated by the same team that brings you Ask.com, the advent of social networking sites apparently did the site in.

Bloglines made keeping up with blog feeds easier by sending “feeds” to subscribers, who would sign up for updates from the blogs that interested them most, and which used the RSS protocol, a system that makes reading posts from numerous blogs all in one place a breeze.

All is not lost if you wish to continue keeping up with your blogs via RSS: you have until the first of the month to export your feeds, and then import them to another service such as Google’s Reader service.

Warner Brothers Entertainment Group has in the last week has absorbed three of the most popular free to play RPGs on the Internet today: Lord of the Rings, Dungeons and Dragons Online, and of course, Asheron’s Call. They accomplished this feat by taking over North American based Turbine Inc, the largest privately held game studio on the continent.

As a result, Warner Brothers now has a share of the rapidly growing MMORPG market with an estimated 20 million players in the three former Turbine properties. With the other twenty-plus games already in Warner Brother Entertainment Group’s stable of electronic entertainment they seem poised to become one of the power players in the on-line gaming industry.

Warner Brothers Entertainment Group has in the last five years has acquired all, or the majority of the assets of, five different game studios, TT Games, Snowblind Studios, Midway Games, Turbine Inc, and Rocksteady Studios. Consolidating under the Warner Brothers aegis game and game properties ranging from the LEGO© gaming franchise to the Lord of the Rings© online and console games.

With such a large stable of electronic properties acquired over the last few years Warner Brothers is building into a quiet giant in the electronic entertainment world and with the acquisition of Turbine Inc’s online MMORPG assets, Warner Brothers Entertainment Group is now a long way into an acquisition of a serious percentage of the web-based gaming market, one it has already been a part of with the Xbox 360 and other console platforms’ Internet and proprietary internet linkage content.

With such a growing web footprint, the other MMORPG providers as well as firms like Atari and Wizards of the Coast will soon be facing increasing competition for the dollars of already overstretched and underfunded consumers. Only time will tell if this devolves into a possible economic conflict between web gaming giants.

Now, how does that effect the common player or casual Internet user? Simply put, with the acquisition of three of the largest free to play games under one roof, there will be changes made. What they are yet to be discovered. The three could continue as free to play with a sub-architecture of for pay augments like special gear, special “VIP” access levels, and other pay to unlock game content, or the games could revert to pay to play status. Given the recent release of an additional update to Turbine Inc’s former game properties, the dissolution of the three internet titles is unlikely.

Given the Lord of the Rings© becoming a free to play title only with the last few weeks, a continuation of the free to play
game market under Warner Brothers tutelage is quite likely, and for cash strapped gamers that means one thing, web gaming through Warner Brothers.

What does that mean for Warner Brothers? Money. What does that mean for the gamer, whether casual or devoted? More resources for their hobby on the Internet.

It was announced by the electronics chain today that in a matter of weeks, the reader will be available for purchase in their stores. The units that will be available include the Kindle 3G and the Kindle 3, with the Kindle DX bringing up the rear later this year.

The addition of the Kindles makes Best Buy the only electronics chain to carry each and every one of the popular e-readers, which will no doubt be a boon for them on Black Friday.

Showing their genius, Best Buy will display the e-readers on endcaps, which will let customers make an informed decision by laying out all of the e-readers side-by-side.

UberTwitter, another popular client, came in at just 2%, whereas Twitter for BlackBerry grabbed 7%. Twitter’s website remains the absolute dominant choice, accounting for 78% of tweets, and iPhone’s Twitter app accounts for 8%, with tweeting by SMS grabbing the same number.

The Twitter for BlackBerry app runs smoothly, and makes it easy to tweet, but unlike UberTwitter, the current version does not support multiple accounts. If one wants to tweet from another account, they have to log out, log in to that account, and then log back into the original account.

Hopefully, this oversight will be fixed in a future upgrade. Even with this limitation, the numbers seem to indicate that UberTwitter has some work to do if it wants to be the undisputed #1 Twitter app for BlackBerry users.

With the advent of the Internet, that went away in favor of sites such as Backpage and Craigslist’s Casual Encounters section.

Under pressure from law enforcement, that section went away, only to be replaced by “adult” services. The section was even to the untrained eye a thinly veiled place for prostitutes to advertise their..er…services. Sure, they’re called “escorts,” but everyone knew. “Everyone,” it seems, includes law enforcement agencies and Attorneys General from all over the country.

Once again bowing to the pressure, Craigslist this weekend eliminated the adult section, and replaced the listing’s position with a “censored” banner. There were many concerns posed by multiple parties, including child sex trafficking, and safety issues, evidenced by the murder of a woman who advertised on Craigslist.

Ads for these services still exist, most notably on the site Backpage, but now that law enforcement is taking a closer look, the “merchants” may choose to peddle their “wares” somewhere else.

Specifically, the alerts would inform the user when their friends post updates, photos, links, and so forth.

Essentially, the feature allows you to subscribe to a user, and in so doing, you’ll get details on almost every aspect of their Facebook activity. It’s not yet known whether this feature will be an opt-in feature, or if you’ll be able to opt out. In any event, it could potentially raise privacy concerns, and it just seems to invite stalking if abused. On the other hand, it also seems as if it’s an easy way to keep tabs on a friend’s activities without any effort.
